Why 16mm — Not 17mm

The optimal primary belt width for Sur-Ron and Segway e-bikes has been widely debated. Many shops recommend the widest possible belt (17mm), but joint testing with Gates® revealed that 16mm is the optimal width for these platforms. Here’s why: wider 17mm belts tend to track to the extreme edge of the flanged pulleys due to slight factory misalignment between the motor and jackshaft. This causes accelerated edge wear on both the belt and pulley — leading to premature failure. The GT4™’s optimized 16mm tooth profile maintains proper clearance to the flanged pulleys, reducing friction and dramatically extending belt life.
